Little Miss Sunshine . . . an independent film about a dysfunctional family. If you’re like us, you’re probably thinking “Little Miss Sunshine – Big Missssstake!” But, don’t be so quick to judge!
This is a day-in-the-life type of movie centered around a very dysfunctional family. The movie stars Greg Kinnear - the well-meaning father who can’t support his family, Steve Carell – the uncle who just botched a suicide attempt, Alan Arkin – the highly inappropriate Grandfather, Toni Collette – the clueless mother, a teenage son who has taken a vow of silence and a 7 year old daughter who is awkward and too naive to have any idea how screwed up her family really is. The family is on a mission to get the daughter to California in time to compete in the Little Miss Sunshine pageant. To get there, they drive from Albuquerque to L.A.in their bright yellow VW bus. Along the way anything that can go wrong does…and a few things go right. Ultimately, when all else fails, your family always has your back.
In spite of its odd premise and low-budget look, Little Miss Sunshine is in fact a very good movie. The acting is superb across the board – the strong cast has exceptional chemistry, and even Steve Carell in his first serious role is fantastic. And, even though it’s definitely a “dark” comedy, there are several laugh out loud moments throughout. A heartwarming story with a few thought-provoking philosophies tossed in round out the experience, making Little Miss Sunshine both enjoyable and worthwhile. See it . . . and perhaps even your family will suddenly seem much more normal than before.
